Certificate in Primary Teaching - Life science & Earth science

 
LIFE SCIENCE & EARTH SCIENCE, SOCIAL SCIENCES

During the two years of training at VITE, the Primary Francophone section have devoted four hours per week to the sciences - 2 hours devoted to the Life and Earth  sciences and 2 hours for Social Science. The training scheme in the Life and Earth sciences relates to 20 subjects or topics, gathered in 6 fields corresponding to the domains being used as subdivisions in the program of natural and social sciences of primary education teaching in Vanuatu. Running in parallel, the Social Sciences relates to 13 subjects or topics gathered around the Geography, History, and of the Civics.

Because of the teaching character of the training given during the training, this program is naturally divided into two complementary strands: a strand known as “disciplinary” which aims at defining what trainees need to know in order to teach the Life and Earth and Social Sciences in primary school; and a strand known as “pedagogy” which aims at defining the methods and teaching level trainees must know in order to teach these subjects.

The training given in the field of the Life and Earth and Social Sciences allows the students:

  • to improve and master the general knowledge and necessities of these domains, and in particular on the topics of the national program of Earth/Life and Social sciences on all the levels of year 1 to 6;
  • to acquire didactic competences to teach the Life and Earth sciences and Social sciences on all the levels of year 1 to year 6;
  • to have an overall concept-map of the material

- Reproduction of the animals
- Growth and development of the animals/Migration and colonization

Ecology and environment:
- Concept of ecosystem and natural balance
- Cycles of the matter
- Environmental protection

Biology and health:
- The immune system
- Human nutrition
- Human breathing
- Human reproduction
 


SOCIAL SCIENCES


Geography:
- Physical Geography
- Human Geography
- Economy

Civics:
- Political regime/Constitution of Vanuatu
- The organization of the State of Vanuatu
- Communities (families and national)
- Education of the citizens (role of the school: objectives)





The plant world:
- Classification of the plants
- Reproduction of the plants
- Growth and development plants

Earth Science:
- The planets around the universe
- Basic weather concepts
- Energy resources
- Structure of the Earth and total tectonics
- Volcanos and seisms

Agriculture:
- To cultivate plants
- To raise animals







History:
- Prehistory
- The settlement of the Pacific
- Explorers
- The colonization of Vanuatu
- The world in the 20th century
- The Southern Pacific



At the end of this training, students will:
  • have the scientific tools and sufficient knowledge to teach in primary school;
  • be sensitized to and have an awareness of the earth and life sciences;
  • be able to plan a science lesson;
  • be able to master the contents of the national curriculum
  • be able to undertake the required experimental science activities,
  • be able to collect and maintain resources necessary to the teaching of the sciences
  • be able to create and maintain a teaching file of the teaching of sciences
  • be able to create and maintain a personal work plan.
  • have sufficient knowledge of the local, regional, and world technique and methodologies specific to the teaching of science.
