Certificate in Primary Teaching (Anglophone) - Mathematics

MATHEMATICS

This course aims to introduce the changes that take place within the mathematics text book; the teacher’s guide and the pupils’ book. This is to cater for better improvements and better teaching of the adopted syllabus. As we are aware of this problem, it is quite common for all our teachers throughout the nation. The most difficult part in this case is the way the book is programmed or schemed. As it has been programmed in a 7 day basis we will be trying to reformulate this 7 day to a more substantial one, a 5 day scheme. The seven day program emphasizes the teaching of several topics per 7 day. The 5 day one will be dealing with each topic for quite a number of days before going on to another topic. Thus, this will give a better understanding to our children about a particular topic before going on to another topic.

As teachers usually spend a year in the field to gain experience in teaching, maybe they have come across so many problems and difficulties regarding this area. This course will target these areas.

Another area of importance is the way mathematics is taught. As we are living in a continuous changing world, almost everything changes from time to time. This course introduces the changing nature of mathematics teaching and learning. It is designed to help teachers become part of these changes and growth – one who helps children develop confidence and understanding as they do mathematics. It begins with traditional beliefs about teaching and learning mathematics and gradually introduces the principles and practices of effective mathematics teaching. Trainee teachers will also be engaged in very practical activities relating to weekly scheming, lesson preparation and presentation of activities during micro – teaching sessions.
