This course provides
(a) a basic understanding of adolescence and how adolescent students learn
(b) an understanding of, and basic skills in, key elements of good classroom teaching
(c) knowledge and skills specific to the two subjects students will teach in school.
As a lead-in to Teaching Practice the course explores the concepts "intelligence" and
"cognitive development" and their implications for teaching and learning. It considers key
aspects of adolescent development and how young people learn, focussing on what this knowledge
tells us about effective teaching in Vanuatu. The course deals with basic principles of
effective lesson planning, teaching skills, and classroom management. Students are introduced
to major features of the content, underlying philosophy and recommended approaches to teaching
and learning in each of their teaching subjects. Students also visit and observe classes in a
variety of schools in Port Vila.
ES22. The Social and Professional Context of Teaching
12 credit points.
This course has three distinct modules. The first, Education in its Social Context,
introduces students to key aspects of the historical and cultural context in which schools
function in Vanuatu. It gives students the opportunity to begin to consider ways in which
formal schooling may need to adapt to Vanuatu traditions. It is expected students will become
more aware of some important issues which will remain significant matters for consideration
throughout their lives as teachers. The second module, Assessment and Evaluation, provides
an introduction to the principles and practice of classroom assessment and the reporting of
student progress in a school setting. The third component of the course, Entering the
Profession, deals with questions of professionalism in teaching, and raises awareness of a
range of issues and procedures specific to education in Vanuatu.
