Vanuatu Studies is designed to provide students with an overview of the history of Vanuatu and
its development as an independent nation. The course is divided into two sections.
Part I, The Origins of Vanuatu, deals with the origin of the first people who came to
Vanuatu, their traditions and culture, the impact of the first Europeans, colonial rule and
the struggle for independence.
Part II, Modern Vanuatu, deals with the period after Independence and
focuses on the
challenges and problems associated with development, including attempts in recent years to
correct some of the weaknesses which have arisen.
