Guidelines for the Award of Assignment Grades


These guidelines are designed to give students and lecturers an indication of requirements for the award of grades for assignments.  To be awarded a particular grade an assignment must be characterised by most of the criteria listed.  The guidelines are applicable only to assignments requiring a significant amount of written and/or oral work, such as reports, essays, seminar presentations, debates.


A+
85-100%
· Work of exceptional quality
· Evidence of extensive reading and research
· Cogent analysis and/or synthesis
· Creativity and/or originality in thought and/or presentation
· Excellent command of English expression and accuracy
· Correct use of the language of the field of study
· Conventions of referencing and bibliography are respected
A
80-84%
 
B+
75-79%
· Evidence of extensive reading
· A well-planned argument, showing reflection, some originality, thorough and accurate analysis and synthesis
· Good presentation
· Very good command of English expression and accuracy
· Correct use of the language of the field of study
· Conventions of referencing and bibliography are respected
B
65-74%
· Clear evidence of adequate reading
· A well-constructed argument
· Some evidence of critical thought
· Neat presentation and organisation
· Competent command of English expression and largely free of errors
· Conventions of referencing and bibliography are respected
C+ 
 60-64%

50-59%
· Appropriate response to the set task
· Evidence of appropriate reading
· Main points are developed but analysis and synthesis may be shallow or partial
· Language is understandable
· Basic conventions of referencing and bibliography are followed
D
40-49%
 

 0-39%
· Inadequate reading or research
· Response is superficial, incomplete or off-task
· Evidence of plagiarism
· Language is not understandable
